What are Bank Holidays?
Businesses are allowed to close for the day when a bank holiday occurs. Most offices and all banks suspend activity and sales until the next working day. Despite this, many retail and service businesses will stay open, and can often get a much larger amount of revenue than a normal weekday (especially shops, restaurants and bars). Employees that work on bank holidays will often receive an increased wage for the day.
Whats the difference between a Bank Holiday and a Public Holiday?
A bank holiday is a public holiday, although not all public holidays are bank holidays! An individual isn’t automatically allowed a day off on a bank holiday, although most people are granted time off. Despite this, some employees find that bank holidays are their busiest time (especially those that work in the service and retail industries).
When did Bank Holidays start?
The first official day (along with three other days) was in 1847. We now get many more than 4 official days, thanks to the bank holiday act of 1947 (exactly a century after the 4 days were founded).
