Who doesn’t love an extra day off work? If you’re like us, you probaby get giddy at the mere mention of a long weekend. Unfortunately, most of us have a very limited amount of annual leave/days off work before the boss starts getting a bit red in the face. Thats why we love Bank Holidays.
If you do unfortunately have to work on these most joyous of days, at least you’re getting paid a bit more then usual (we hope!). Get your holiday booking forms at the ready, this is the bit you’ve been waiting for:

What are Bank Holidays?
Bank Holidays are holidays where many businesses (and all banks!) are closed for the day. Many offices and businesses will suspend trading until the next working day, although many service/retail related businesses (shops and restaurants) will experience extremely large volumes of custom, and thus will deliberately stay open. People that work on bank holidays will often experience higher rates of pay.
When do the Clocks Change?
When planning a holiday or vacation it’s important to keep track of things like Daylight Savings time. You don’t want to be late for your flights! Ask yourself beforehand, when do the clocks go back?
Special Bank Holidays
Sometimes the date of a bank holiday will be changed to make it more convenient. If a bank holiday falls on the weekend, the date will often be moved to the Monday of the next week. Special occassions also warrant one-off bank holidays. In 2011, the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton was announced as a public bank holiday. In 2012, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee has also been announced as a one-off bank holiday.
Other Important Dates
There are numerous other important dates across the year which may be worth noting down in your diary. Some of the most important religious dates include the start and finish of the Christian period of lent. Don’t keep asking yourself, “when does lent end?” Check the link to find out!
